Daniel Deephouse

Picture
Daniel Deephouse is a lifelong bonsai practitioner and educator originally from Perth, Australia. He began studying bonsai in 1980 at the age of eight under the guidance of his grandmother Elizabeth Deephouse and has spent more than four decades developing his practice through continued study, travel, and hands-on work with trees.

Daniel has been volunteering with the bonsai program at The Huntington Library & Botanical Gardens since 2019, where he is now the Assistant Curator of Bonsai, supporting the care, exhibition, and ongoing development of the collection, as well as the volunteer program. He is an active member of the Santa Anita Bonsai Club and Sansui Kai Bonsai Club, and he serves on the advisory board of the Japanese Garden at the Donald C. Tillman Water Reclamation Plant. His work blends traditional and modern bonsai practices, grounded in continual learning, with living trees serving as a vessel for connection to nature, to one another, and to community.
